Introduction and Definition

It is a very common pigmentary disorder usually confined to the face. To begin with, it shows as light-brown pigmented patches on the cheeks. It later spreads to the nose, the center of the forehead, the area above the eyebrows, the upper lip, and the chin. In early cases, the patches are discrete, bilaterally symmetrical, light mottling. As the disorders progress, the patches, become confluent and the whole of the face including even the upper neck may assume a mask-like pigmentation.

Is Cholasma and Melasma is same?
Yes, both term is same. In medical book has mentioned both are the same with signs and symptoms. They are synonymous.


Symptoms and Signs

  1. The symptoms of melasma are dark, irregular, well-defined, pigmented spots.
  2. These patches usually develop gradually over time.
  3. Chloasma or Melasma does not cause any symptoms other than cosmetic discoloration.
  4. The size of the patch may vary from person to person, ranging from 1 cm to more than 15 cm.
  5. Its location can be classified as Centro face, macula, or mandible.
  6. The most common is the Centro facial treatment, where plaques appear on the cheeks, nose, upper lip, forehead, and chin.
  7. The mandibular category occupies the plaques of both collateral branches, while the macular position only occupies the plaques of the nose and cheeks
